Students will learn to create and use beeswax wraps as a reusable alternative to reduce single-use plastic waste.

Success Criteria

I can participate in a lunchbox waste audit and identify common waste items.

I can explain why reducing single-use lunch packaging is important for the environment.

I can follow steps to create my own beeswax wrap.

I can describe how beeswax wraps help reduce waste and promote sustainability.

I can share ideas for reducing waste in lunchboxes at school and at home.

Program Overview

This hands-on incursion invites Stage 2 and 3 students to explore sustainable lunchtime habits by conducting a lunchbox audit and learning how to reduce waste through creating beeswax wraps. Students will investigate the types of waste generated from their school lunches, reflect on packaging choices, and discover eco-friendly alternatives. Through crafting their own reusable beeswax wraps, students gain practical skills and a deeper understanding of reducing plastic waste, encouraging sustainable practices both at school and home.

The program includes

Conduct a lunchbox waste audit
Conduct a lunchbox waste audit by collecting and categorising waste items from students’ lunchboxes, noting the most common types of waste generated.
Exploring the impacts of single-use packaging
Facilitate a reflective discussion on the findings, exploring the impacts of single-use packaging on the environment and how students’ choices affect waste production.
Making beeswax wraps

Introduce beeswax wraps as a reusable, eco-friendly alternative to plastic wrap, explaining how they work and their benefits. Students are guided step-by-step through the process of making their own beeswax wraps using fabric squares, beeswax, and safe melting techniques.

After completing the wraps, discuss practical tips for caring for and using beeswax wraps to extend their life and reduce waste.

Engage students in brainstorming additional ways to reduce lunchbox waste, promoting sustainable habits at school and at home.
