Environmental Art

About this program

Environmental Art programs at Bournda have been specifically designed to assist students in learning about their natural environment. The following art activities have been developed for Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students. An environmental art program is designed to develop skills in the following areas:

  1. Collection and observation of material for investigation
  2. Classification of objects
  3. Recording, drawing or making models of objects
  4. An interest and understanding of the natural environment

Each of the art activities are designed to heighten observational skills and expand visual expression by using a variety of techniques and materials.

Environmental Art can be run as a whole day program, or one or more activities can be run in conjunction with any other Bournda programs.

Syllabus outcomes

Creative Arts K-6

Early Stage 1

VAES1.1

Makes simple pictures and other kinds of artworks about things and experiences.

VAES1.2

Experiments with a range of media in selected forms.

Stage 1

VAS1.1

Makes artworks in a particular way about experiences of real and imaginary things.

VAS1.2

Uses the forms to make artworks according to varying requirements.

Learning intention

Early Stage 1 –

students learn to:
• think about themselves as artists in their artmaking
• explore different kinds of things and experiences in their making of artworks
• make drawings, paintings, sculptures etc about things of interest to them and their experiences
• use a variety of media, techniques and tools to create different effects

Stage 1 –

students learn to:
• think about how they can work in similar ways to artists in their making of artworks
• explore different kinds of subject matter and concepts in their making of artworks
• make different kinds of artworks including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, digital artworks and videos
• extend their skills in using a variety of media, techniques and tools to create effects that link to things in the world

Learning experiences

Leaves
An observational pencil drawing of leaves, paying particular attention to overlapping shapes, irregular contours and pattern of veins. Leaves are used as templates and finished drawings are mounted on black cardboard.
Under the Sea
A design based on sea creatures using templates and aquarelle pencils to explore contrasting strong and subtle and warm and cool colour effects.
Wildlife Design
A black and white design using thick and thin felt tip pens, based on Bournda wildlife and inspired by Aboriginal Art. Emphasis on space-filling, abstraction and decoration.
Imaginary Bird
A collage exercise designed to extend the imaginative process by using brightly coloured gummed paper to create an imaginary bird.
Insect Frieze
An exercise using fine black pen line and coloured wash to produce a long horizontal frieze of insect drawings.
